Hello,

I have two android devices that I am using to crunch for Citizen Science. One of them has no issues while the other one keeps receiving error messages:

Phone Details:

Product Name: HTC HTC One_M8 - SDK:21 ABI: armeabi-v7a
Operating System: Android 3.4.0-gadd5817 (Android 5.0.1)
BOINC version: 7.4.41

A total of 58 tasks were sent to this device and all of them got an error. This was one of the workunits that got an error:

subset_sum_52_27_50049760113870_1
Work unit: 2200362
Exit Status: 1 (0x1) Unknown error number

Has anyone faced an issue like this before? My thought is that it could be that maybe its the OS version that is causing the issues because the other device has Android
3.0.31-1498778 (Android 4.4.2) version and seems to have no problems crunching work units.

Thank you for your help.[/u]

Any one else see a problem like this? I think I heard newer versions of the Android OS were having issues...

Hi Travis,

I have also noticed that another android device is also having issues. Its a sony experiaAndroid 3.4.0-perf-g47adf36 (Android 5.0.2).

If it is an OS version issue are there plans to test work units that would work with version 5.0.x?

Thanks

I'd like that you think about creating an app of DNA@Home also for Android devices. I have this ones
Nexus 7 2013
(SDK:22 ABI:armeabi-v7a 3.4.0-gfe3bd61 Android 5.1.1)
Brondi Gladiator 2
(SDK:17 ABI:armeabi-v7a 3.4.5 Android 4.2.1)
SurfTab Ventos 7.0
(SDK:16 ABI:armeabi-v7a 3.0.8-gd0fd754-dirty Android 4.1.1)

Soon I'll buy the LG G4 and I'd like to run the DNA@Home app also on Android devices.

Same situation - Galaxy Tab running Android 4.4.2 can crunch away without issue, while Galaxy S4 running Android 5.0.1 receives a computation error on every task.

Since this was happening with multiple projects, I looked into it and found this thread on BOINC’s message board, which cites this thread on World Community Grid (a BOINC project sponsored by IBM).

The issue is that Android 5.0+ only supports position-independent executables (PIE). As a consumer & not a developer, that’s Greek to me, but all BOINC projects have to be rewritten for 5.0+ to support PIE. Here’s some more information from BOINC’s Wiki.

I set Citizen Science Grid not to receive new tasks on my S4 / device running 5.0, as I’m not sure if these computation errors make it back home, but they certainly wouldn’t be useful. I can confirm that World Community Grid's Outsmart Ebola Together & AIDS@Home projects are a great 5.0-compatible substitute that are currently running on my phone :)

The SSS android executable is old and predates CSG - it was dragged from an archive.

So it almost certainly won't be PIE compatible and your experience supports this supposition.

Until someone takes the source code and works on it, that situation won't change.

Hi everyone,

Are there any plans to try to do beta units to see if subset can now be run on android version 5.0 +?

Hello,

Just trying to see if any work is planned on the horizon or if we should expect it to be sometime far in the future.

Thank you :)

Are there plans for developing DNA@Home for Android devices? (both ARM and x86 devices)

I am guessing the issue with Android version 5+ is still there.
