Travis said in the news section just the other day:

On another note, we finally have a new application to start sending new workunits out. I'm currently testing this on OSX, and once that's working I'll move on to linux and then windows. So there should be a slow trickle of workunits being released this week while I test things and get the new application and server side daemons up and running.

This is something I've been developing for Wildlife@Home. We have a large number of images that we want to detect wildlife in, not to mention the massive amounts of video that Susan has collected.

What we want to use to do this classification is convolutional neural networks (CNNs), however we have some issues in terms of what architecture for the CNN we should be using, and our training data is a bit more challenging than what people usually deal with in the literature. Basically, the number of positive examples we have (different types of wildlife) is significantly smaller than the number of negative examples we have (everything else in the background).

So, I developed EXACT in an attempt to evolve the structure of CNNs for us. Each work unit is a different architecture for a CNN, and the server takes your results and evolves a population of the best found CNNs, using mutations and combinations of CNNs in the population to generate new work units.

I'm actually really excited about this and I think we should get some very interesting results should it all work. Right now we're using it on the MNIST handwritten digits data set as a test problem so we know it's working the way it's supposed to. But once I'm confident it's actually working we'll start using it on data sets we've generated from all your input marking up videos and imagery.

Hope that helps!

Yup, EXACT is the new wildlife@home app.

Will you be purging the database of the old results? I've still got 26 "results" that are quite old. Also, do you need to show older apps on the applications list?

I know this will be low on your priority but those 26 just get in the way now.
